Tennis - The Delhi Lawn Tennis Association has come out in defence of its decision to host the India vs. Spain Davis Cup World Group play-off tie in the evening slot and says they did the same to protect the players from the heat and to attract a larger number of spectators.
India's Davis Cup captain Anand Amritraj came out and criticized the evening slot of the Davis Cup tie and said that neither he nor the players were consulted for the same. A press release from DLTA states that, "Like other high profile events including Chennai Open, Champions Tennis League organized by Mr Vijay Amritraj and IPTL organized by Globosports, DLTA has chosen to host the matches during evening time to make the event more accessible and friendly to the tennis loving people of Delhi so that the stadium is filled to capacity to cheer the Indian team.
Although Davis Cup ties do not generate any surplus because of high costs attached to the same in terms of organisational costs including minimum requirements as stipulated by ITF and players' fees and travelling expenses, it is a matter of great pride for DLTA to organize this prestigious Davis Cup tie.
DLTA has decided not to sell tickets in order to encourage young tennis players to come and witness the world's leading players live on the courts of DLTA." India takes on Spain on the hardcourts of the DLTA with a berth in the 16 nation World Group at stake.
Spain will be led by Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez. India will be led by Saketh Myneni, Ramkumar Ramanathan, Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna. Also Read: Rafael Nadal to Play in India .
