Stan Wawrinka needed three sets to beat Tatsuma Ito, who'd defeated Stan last year in the same tournament. The Swiss won 6/3 2/6 6/4. Ito started well in the match and held the rhythm, but the Swiss ended up finishing better as he won the first set.
In the second set Wawrinka, seemed to have lost his focus and made many unforced errors, which allowed Ito win the set. The third set was quite shaky. The Swiss was up 4-0, then Ito came back to win three games in a row, saved three match points on 5-4 but in the end Wawrinka prevailed.
In the quarter-finals, he will play either Krajicek or Joao Sousa. The Portoguese player defeated the Kuala Lumpur Finalist Feliciano Lopez 6/4 4/6 6/1. There were nine aces and five double faults for Lopez, whose serve didn't help him either.
Kei Nishikori beat Sam Querrey 7/6, 6/3. In the first set, there wasn't any break point. In the tie-break, Nishikori dominated and in the second set too kept the match under control. Following this loss, it's been two years that Querrey has beaten a top-10 player.
Nishikori, on the other hand, won his 50th match for the year. This was the second consecutive year that he achieved this feat. In the quarter-finals, Nishikori will face either Steve Johnson or Marin Cilic.
The Croatian beat Donald Young 7/5 5/7 6/4 the score after two hours and 38 mins of play. Cilic put 49% first serves in, won 48% points on his second serves and made 48 Winners and 51 unforced errors. Gilles Simon beat Jiri Vesely 6/4 6/2 and will play against Gilles Muller, who defeated Jeremy Chardy in two tie-break sets.
