ATP Newport: Tough loss for Kozlov. Wins for Kudla, Kamke and Novikov- View: 1222 by Jovica Ilic
23-year-old Dennis Novikov made a great start in Newport, beating Marco Chiudinelli 6-1 6-3 in just 58 minutes, for his first ATP triumph since Canada Masters last year. Dennis' first serve worked like a charm, winning 24 out of 25 points, and he never faced a break point.
Marco struggled to find the way to defend his second serve and he got broken 4 times from 5 opportunities that Novikov created. From game 3, the American broke his rival 4 times in a row, opening a 6-1 3-0 lead, and he never looked back in a commanding victory that propelled himself to the second round.
Adrian Menendez-Maceiras never won a main draw match on grass in his career before, but he did that today against promising young gun Stefan Kozlov, by 6-2 7-6 in just under an hour and a half. Spaniard fired 7 aces and his first serve was a big weapon, keeping Kozlov without too many chances on return and fending off both break points he faced to keep his serve intact.
On the other hand, Stefan couldn't find his game in the first set and he missed a nice chance to send the match into a decider. Menendez-Maceiras got an early break in game 3 and he confirmed the set with another one in game 7, jumping into a 5-2 lead before he closed it on own serve.
The second set saw a very intense battle, as Kozlov raised his level to be toe to toe with his rival. In games 10 and 12, Stefan wasted set points, unable to take advantage from opponent's loose service games, and he paid the price in the tie break, losing it 7-5 to end his run already in the first round.
