WTA Toronto - Wozniacki upsets Pliskova and will face Stephens- View: 879 by Gatto Luigi
Nearly three hours and three rain delays. That's what it took to Caroline Wozniacki to upset the World No. 1 Karolina Pliskova and advance into Rogers Cup semifinals for the first time since 2010. The Dane prevailed by 7-5 6-7 (3) 6-4, making a difference mentally and physically when it came to key moments. Wozniacki was leading head to head meetings 4-2, but this year Pliskova had beat her in Doha and Eastbourne, while the Dane had won in Miami. First result played a key role in the whole match, as Pliskova was leading 5-1. However Wozniacki came back and won six games in a row. In the second set Pliskova saved four break points on 2-all, then Wozniacki saved two break points in a row on 3-4 but in the tie-break the Czech dominated. Pliskova has some regrets for the third set as she broke Wozniacki in the fifth game, but then lost four of the last five remaining games.
In the semifinals Wozniacki will face Sloane Stephens, who defeated Lucie Safarova by 7-5 in the third set where the Czech player didn't convert three match points. Stephens started the tournament as World No. 934, she upset Kvitova, Kerber and now Safarova.
