It will be a great 25th edition for the Abierto Mexicano Telcel, the ATP/ WTA combined event that will be played in Acapulco from 26th February to 3rd March 2018. The spotlight will be mainly (but not only) on Rafael Nadal, who won the tournament in 2005 and 2013 when the tournament was played on clay, and reached the 2017 final losing to Sam Querrey, who will be returning to defend his title as well.
En route to winning his title in 2017, Querrey beat four top-20 players in a row: David Goffin, Dominic Thiem, Nick Kyrgios and Rafael Nadal. World no. 4 Alexander Zverev will make his first appearance, 2015 finalist Kei Nishikori and Juan Martin del Potro, who lost to Novak Djokovic in the second round are the other big stars who will play the tournament.
2016 champion Thiem, Marin Cilic, who lost to Nadal this year in the semi-final, the 2015 champion David Ferrer, 2008-09 champion Nicolas Almagro, Mischa Zverev and Denis Shapovalov are committed to play too. The organizers are trying to bring Novak Djokovic as well, but the Serbian could play the Dubai Open which is held as the same week as the Mexican Open.
On the women's side at the Mexican Open, 2017 Australian Open and Wimbledon finalist Venus Williams will be the main star. ALSO READ: John McEnroe: 'Nadal is the favourite to achieve year-end no.
