Happy Birthday to Roger Federer as he survives a scare and edges Cilic in Toronto

Tennis: Former World No.1 and 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer made it a happy birthday for himself as he lived on the edge but came out a winner in 3 sets 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 against Marin Cilic in the 3rd round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

Blonde Marilyn Monroe sang Happy Birthday Mr. President in 1962 but now blonde daughters of Federer, Charlene Riva and Myla Rose sang Happy Birthday to their Dad, Mr.

Tennis. But their Dad was made to work very hard for the win by Cilic. There were no breaks in the first set and it had to be decided by a tie-break. In the tie-break, Federer got the first mini-break at 4-4 and got a chance to serve out the set at 6-4, but Cilic got the mini-break back.

Federer got another mini-break and won the tie-break 7-5 to go one set up. In the second set, it went on serve once again and none of them faced any break points in first nine games. Cilic served to stay in the match at 4-5 and saved 6 match points in that game.

The game had 12 Deuces and Cilic ended up holding the game. The set went to tie-break once again and Cilic won it 7-3 to force the match into a decider. Cilic got a break point in the second game of the third set, which would have given him a 2-0 lead, but Federer held the game.

Both players kept holding their serves until the match was levelled at 4 games all. Cilic was 40-0 up and had 4 game points to go 5-4 up but Federer got tge first break of the match in that game, after more than 2 and a half hours, winning the game with a forehand winner down the line.

The Swiss held the game at 15 and won the third set 6-4 to move into the last 8. He will play 5th David Ferrer next, who won 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 against Ivan Dodig. 4th seed Tomas Berdych was beaten in 3 sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 by Feliciano Lopez.

The Spaniard will face Canadian No.1 Milos Raonic for a place in the semifinals, who won 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 against Julien Benneteau. .
