The news of Maria Sharapova failing a drug test has taken the tennis community by storm as being a former World No 1, there are certain things that come out as a surprise. And the news of the Russian failing a drug came as surprising to another former World No 1, Chris Evert.

Evert is not surprised that in every sport there are doping incident to a certain extent but was surprised to hear Sharapova’s name being in the mix. "You'd have to have your head in the sand if you didn't at least assume that every professional sport might have some sort of performing-enhancing drugs being used.

Honestly, in every professional sport I think this goes on to a certain extent. In tennis, it doesn't worry me as much. This went on when I was playing. I know players on the women's tour who were using - who were using performance-enhancing drugs and we didn't even have drug testing". Sharapova herself admitted to failing the drug test for the use of meldonium, which she had been using for the past 10 years and had only been added to the list of substances being banned at the start of this year.

At the moment, there is a possibility of a 4 year ban, however, the extent of the ban is to be determined and can only be revealed after a formal investigation has taken place. And according to Evert if Sharapova comes out clean and her reasons for having used the substance are valid – medically, a deserved ban would be till the end of the year."If it does come out cleanly, I would say banning her for the rest of year would be enough".
