This year Serena Williams played just two events, Auckland and Australian Open, before taking a maternity break for the rest of the season. There were five world no. 1s in the WTA rankings, including Serena, but Carla Suarez Navarro thinks all the players in the WTA Tour are very competitive.

'The level of women's tennis has improved a lot, lately. There were a lot of changes at the top of the WTA rankings, and I think it's something very good for us, since we all know that it's very open and in every tournament you have to be at 100% if you want to win,' said Navarro.

It wasn't a successful season for Carla Suarez, who didn't lift any trophy and dropped down to the 40th place in the rankings. But, the Las Palmas native said the Spanish women in the Tour is experiencing a great moment with Garbine Muguruza's success.

'The Spanish women's tennis has always been a reference point in the world, and we want it to continue like this for many more years. There are very good girls and I am sure that they will give everything to fight for titles.' ALSO READ: John Isner got married, Querrey and Johnson attended .
