Wednesday’s results in Beijing saw a couple of disappointing results even as they relatively reduced the myriad possibilities in the Race to Singapore. In addition, the playing field for the WTA Elite Trophy to be held in Zhuhai has also started to emerge.
Madison Keys pulled out in her third round match against Agnieszka Radwanska, which saw her chances end for a berth in the Singapore finals. The American, who was 16th in the Race, needed to win the title, but was forced to retire midway in her match after being affected with a thigh injury.
Keys will now play in Zhuhai. Keys’ opponent Radwanska, who was 10th in the Singapore Race – a position below Venus Williams’ – now has entered the top-eight bracket. Radwanska’s promotion into the bracket not only follows her win over Keys, but also comes in the wake of Carla Suarez Navarro’s three-set defeat to Timea Bacsinsky in their third round match.
If Radwanska wins Beijing's title, she will qualify for Singapore. Following her win over Suarez Navarro, while Bacsinszky’s chances to qualify for Singapore are still open, the Spaniard’s chances of playing Singapore are now reduced as she too needed to win the China Open title to qualify for the year-end finale.
Elina Svitolina is also out of the Singapore qualification race. The Ukrainian needed both Radwanska and Suarez Navarro to lose their respective third round matches and given that only one of them lost, she will now play Zhuhai.
Garbine Muguruza, who will play Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in the third round on Thursday, will qualify for Singapore in case of a win. The world no. 5 is currently third in the Race after Simona Halep and Maria Sharapova, who have already qualified.
Angelique Kerber needs to reach the final in Beijing to qualify for Singapore in the fourth place, overtaking Petra Kvitova, who’s currently fourth and who lost in the first round. The German won commandingly against Caroline Wozniacki in the third round to keep Singapore well within her sights.
The Dane, in contrast, has dropped out of the race after her loss and will play Zhuhai instead. Another player who would qualify for Singapore if she reaches the final in the Chinese capital is US Open champion Flavia Pennetta. The Italian plays Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the third round on Thursday.
Pennetta’s compatriot Sara Errani, who won her third round against Andrea Petkovic, also needs to reach the final in Beijing in order to be in contention to play the WTA finale. Currently Errani is ranked 17th in the Race to Singapore and she has already made it to the Zhuhai entry list based on her rankings.
