After just an edition, that ended in April with the 18-year-old Czech player Marketa Vondrousova's success over Anett Kontaveit in the final, the WTA Biel switches city and surface, moving to Lugano on clay.
The tournament won't be played on hard-courts at the moment. The second year of the International Swiss event category will be played from 9 to 15 April, and organizers have clear goals and hopes. The decision was taken for two reasons: the first one is that the event is played during a time of the year where players are coming from the North American hard-court season in Indian Wells and Miami and are already preparing for the clay-events, and the second one is that in Biel there were a very few spectators, despite this year the first seed was Karolina Pliskova.
The Biel Mayor Erich Fehr was sorry about it: 'It's a pity that organizers didn't give more time to the tournament to set its place. Other events will be held in the Biel Arena.' ALSO READ: Rafael Nadal: 'Roger Federer is favorite on this kind of surfaces' .
