WTA Hong Kong: Jennifer Brady upsets Shuai Zhang, Qiang Wang advances

American Jennifer Brady upset the eighth seed Shuai Zhang in their second-round match at the Hong Kong Open on Thursday. Brady won in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 after converting four of the six break points on Zhang’s serve.

Brady was particularly dominant in converting points off her second serves. She won 65% of her second service points to Zhang’s 33% and finished the match with a total of 58% points to Zhang’s 42%. China’s Qiang Wang defeated Luksika Kumkhum of Thailand in their second-round match.

Wang also won in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in 80 minutes. She finished the match with 55% points to Kumkhum’s 45%. In the quarter-final, Wang will play Australian Samantha Stosur. Stosur had upset the fourth seeded Agnieszka Radwanska in the second round on Wednesday.

Elina Svitolina and Caroline Wozniacki withdraw

World no.4 Elina Svitolina, who was the top-seed at the Hong Kong Open withdrew from the tournament citing an injury to her right leg.

The Ukrainian’s withdrawal allowed Nicole Gibbs to reach the quarter-final, where she will play her countrywoman Brady for a spot in the semi-final. Svitolina had taken a wild card to play in Hong Kong this week. In the last match of the day, Caroline Wozniacki took withdrew before her second-round match against American Lizette Cabrera.

The Dane, who came on the court to make the announcement mentioned that she had injured her elbow during practice. Cabrera will now play seventh seed Daria Gavrilova in the quarter-final on Friday.
