WTA Barcelona - Mirjana Lucic scores upset win- View: 1494 by Prakash
Former Wimbledon semi-finalist Mirjana Lucic, now ranked no. 100, snapped a 5 match losing streak with a straight sets win over 4th seed Ekaterina Makarova in the first round of the Barcelona Ladies Open. Lucic, who has struggled with injuries and an abusive father, returned to the top 100 last year after years in wilderness during which she did not compete over several periods of time.
She had won only 2 of 10 matches coming into this event. Also winning on Tuesday was Alberta Brianti. The Italian, who own the Morocco title on Sunday, upset 3rd seed Tsvetana Pironkova 6-1, 6-2. Americans had mixed fortunes at this clay court event.
Jamie Hampton was a first round loser while Varvara Lepchenko moved to the second round. Meanwhile, 40 year old Kimiko Date-Krumm was also beaten in the first round by Argentine Gisela Dulko 7-5, 6-4. BARCELONA LADIES OPEN - Tuesday, April 26, 2011 - Singles - First Round Alberta Brianti (ITA) d.
