WTA Madrid - Bethannie Mattek scores career best win over Schiavone

America's third highest ranked woman, after the Williams sisters, scored the biggest win of her career with a 7-6, 6-3 win over reigning French Open champion Francesca Schiavone to advance to the quarter-finals of the WTA Madrid Open.

The win will move Mattek-Sands to no. 38 ini the rankings and if she beats Li Na nest, she will rise to a new career-high rank of no. 34. Also on Thursday, world no. 1 Caroline Wozniacki was beaten for the second time in 11 days by rising German Julia Goerges.

The German, who beat Wozniacki last Sunday in the Stuttgart final, won 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 inspite of getting treated for a foor problem mid way through the match. The woman Schiavone beat in last year's French Open final, Sam Stosur was also knocked out, losing to 7-6, 6-3 to 20 year old Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Roberta Vinci's seven match wining streak ended in a three set loss to Li Na while fourth seed Victoria Azarenka continued to impress with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Arantxa Parra, of Spain. Azarenka, who won 2 consecutive clay court events before withdrawing due to injury in Stuttgart against Goerges, has lost only 5 games in 3 matches here in Madrid.
