American Bethannie Mattek-Sands is making a habit of upsetting higher-ranked Italian players. One week after scoring a career-best win over Francesca Schiavone, the American pulled off another upset win over another higher-ranked Italian - 15th seed Flavia Pennetta - in the first round of the Italian Open in Rome.
Mattek-Sands, fighting for a place in French Open seedings, won 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Meanwhile, Ameican teen Christina McHale was unable to pull off a second consecutive upset. A day after beating world no. 30 Shuai Peng, McHale was beaten by No.
2 seed Francesca Schiavone 6-3, 6-1. Schiavone is the reigning French Open and is looking for a morale-boosting win in her native Rome as she attempts to become the first Italian in 26 years to lift the women's title. Also, 7th seed Maria Sharapova had a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 win over countrywoman Ekaterina Makarova, dropping just two games.
