Russia's Maria Sharapova set up a semi-final clash with current world no. 1 Caroline Wozniacki when her opponent on Friday Victoria Azarenka withdrew due to an elbow injury during the second set of the quarter-final at the Italian Open in Rome.

Azarenka won the first set 6-4 and was down 0-3 when her elbow injury caused her to withdraw. It was the 10th time since the start of 2010 that the Belarussian has retired in a match. Wozniacki needed three sets to get past 2007 and 2008 champion Jelena Jankovic China's Li Na and Aussie Sam Stosur play in the other semi.

Stosur beat local favourite Francesca Schiavone in a reversal of their French Open final last year while Li Na was too good for unseeded Greta Arn, of Hungary.
