Ekaterina Makarova made her Top 100 and Top 50 debut in 2008, when she was part of the Russian team that won the Fed Cup. In 2009 she was runner-up twice, in Fès (l. to Medina Garrigues) and Estoril (l. to Wickmayer). In 2010 Makarova won first WTA title at Eastbourne (d. Azarenka in final), without losing a set.
In 2013, her first Top 20 season reached two semifinals in Birmingham (l. to Oudin) and Seoul (l. to Wozniacki); QF at Australian Open (l. to Sharapova) and won the Us Open mixed doubles title (w/Soares). In 2013 she won her first Grand Slam in doubles with her longtime friend and partner Elena Vesnina at Roland Garros (d. Errani/Vinci in F). They also won at 2014 US Open (d. Hingis/Pennetta in F) and 2017 Wimbledon (d. H.Chan/Niculescu in F). In 2014 Makarova won one WTA title at Pattaya City (d. Ka.Pliskova in final) and reached her first Grand Slam semifinal at US Open (l. eventual champion S.Williams). She is the first player who never held No.1 ranking and defeated both Williams sisters in Grand Slam play (S.Williams at 2012 Australian Open and V.Williams at 2014 Australian Open).
She came back to the last eight at 2015 Australian Open (l. Sharapova). She made her Top 10 debut in January 2015. She was the 110th player to move into the Top 10 in WTA history and 12th Russian to do so.
Her stellar doubles season in 2016 included winning gold medal for Russia at Rio Olympics (w/Vesnina; d. Bacsinszky/Hingis in F) and titles at Montréal (d. Halep/Niculescu in F) and WTA Finals in Singapore (d. Mattek-Sands/Safarova in F). Also were runners-up at Rome (l. Hingis/Mirza) and Roland Garros (l. Garcia/Mladenovic). In singles, Makarova reached four QFs, at Sydney (l. Bencic), Miami (l. Kuznetsova), Eastbourne (l. Konta) and New Haven (l. Kvitova), and the R16 at Australian Open (l. Konta), Wimbledon (l. Vesnina) and Rio Olympics (l. Kvitova). In 2017 at Roland Garros, she beat Kerber collecting her first win over a reigning World No.1 in five attempts after losses at 2007 US Open (l. Henin), 2014 Dubai (l. S.Williams), 2014 US Open (l. S.Williams) and 2016 US Open (l. S.Williams). During Us Open Series, she won her third singles title of career at Washington, DC (d. Goerges in F). Recovered from a set down on three occasions in the American capital, and in the final broke with Goerges serving for the match at 6-5 in the second set.
