Magdalena Rybarikova completed her first Top 50 season (finishing No.45) in 2009, as she won her maiden WTA title in Birmingham (d. Li in final). In 2010 the Slovak celebrated her second title in Memphis (won when Marino ret. in final w/abdominal injury). She then added to her tally two consecutive triumphs in Washington DC in 2012 and 13, when she clinched her first top 50 season. In 2014, she defeated three higher‐ranked opponents to reach the New Haven final, including 2r defeat of World No.2 Halep. Her 2016 campaign was highlighted by reaching the quarter-finals in Indian Wells (No.8 Bencic and No.10 Vinci via ret., l. eventual champion Azarenka), her best result at WTA Premier Mandatory level. Ranked No.97, she was the lowest‐ranked player to make the last eight at the tournaments since No.99 Hampton in 2012. She missed the second half of 2016 due to wrist and knee surgery and in March 2017 fell as low as No.453. Then, Rybarikova finished with an 18‐1 record on grass, clinching two ITF singles titles and two semifinals in Nottingham (l. eventual R‐Up Konta) and Wimbledon (l. eventual champion Muguruza). She became the first Slovak woman to reach the semifinals at the Championships, playing her 36th major main draw: only 10 players in the Open Era played more Slams before reaching their first semifinal. Then, she completed the 2017 campaign with a runner‐up finish in Linz (l. Strycova in F), her first WTA tournament as top seed, and making her debut in Zhuhai where she failed to move to the semifinal.
