Eastern Backhand Grip

Starting from the Continental grip, turn your hand anti-clockwise (if you are right- handed) to find this grip. The "V" must be lined up with the first edge your hand meets (Figure).

Advantages of this grip

As is the case for the forehand Eastern grip, this grip allows you to hit both flat and topspin shots. It allows you to maintain good wrist stability on impact.

Disadvantages of this grip

If you want to hit a lot of topspin with this grip, you may find that you lose a bit of control. Also, with this grip it is difficult to play balls that rise beyond hip-height. It is not the ideal grip for slice shots, which are more easily hit with the Continental grip.
