The dream of victory for Alessandra Fanali (70 69 67) at the Margara Golf Club (par 72) in Fubine Monferrato fades only at the play-off, but the Italian amateur was among the absolute protagonists of the Ladies Italian Open presented by Regione Piemonte won at play-off by Morgane Metraux (67 70 69) who overtook both the 21-year-old from Fiuggi and the English Meghan MacLaren (69 70 67) with an eagle in the play-off.
All three players closed the 54 regular holes, after a flurry of emotions between overtaking and counter-overtaking, with a score of 206 (-10) strokes. But what made the difference in the play-off was a feat of the 25-year-old from Lausanne - the first Swiss to conquer this event - who responded best to her opponents' birdie and celebrated the feat in what can be considered her second land (her grandfather maternal was born in Borgomanero, in the province of Novara).
Morgane Metraux, results
For the Italians it was an amazing tournament, the one included in the LET calendar. Three were in the Top 10: in addition to the Fanali, the Brianza amateur Carolina Melgrati ranked 4 / a with 207 (69 68 70, -9).
While Roberta Liti, a Tuscan proette, confirmed the result already achieved in 2021, finishing in seventh place with 209 (70 67 72, -7). It is the demonstration of a constantly growing movement towards the Ryder Cup 2023. And to record there are not only the results of a sector, the female one, at the forefront and with an envied technical staff.
But also the partial data relating to membership which show an increase in members (85,086 as of May 31, 2022, + 4.63% compared to a year ago), with women who (as of May 31 2022) reached 21,581 (+6 % compared to the same date of 2021).
Morgane Metraux is the new queen of the Ladies Italian Open presented by Regione Svizzera - The Ladies Italian Open presented by Regione Piemonte therefore has a new queen: Morgane Metraux. First Swiss to establish herself in this tournament, she celebrated success alongside her parents (with her dad-caddy and her mother, who speaks Italian very well) and her sister Kim (with whom she finished the first round in the lead), seventh like Liti and the Spanish Nuria Iturrioz.
For the Swiss this is the first success on the Ladies European Tour that comes after the one achieved in 2021 on the Epson Tour (second American women's circuit) at the Island Resort Championship. The Lausanne proette succeeds the French Lucie Malchirand, champion in 2021 and forced to forfeit this year due to a back injury.
Great Italy in Piedmont. Amazing performance of the amateurs Fanali and Melgrati, confirmation for the Liti - At the Margara Golf Club the third round gave endless twists. With two initial birdies, Melgrati (who already achieved a Top 10 last year, finishing tenth) immediately took the lead.
Immediate reaction from South African Lee Anne-Pace (at the top after the second round), then sixth with 208 (-8), who after the first eight holes played in a masterly way, with two birdies and an eagle, paid dearly a double bogey at 9 which preceded three bogeys (his birdie at 18 was just needed).
To take advantage of this were Melgrati (six birdies and four bogeys) and Fanali (for her she tries bogey free with five birdies) who, shot after shot, shared the top of the standings after 16 holes. Melgrati paid dearly for a bogey at 17, Fanali had the opportunity to create an eagle at 18 but found a birdie.
And MacLaren, sly, with three consecutive birdies (at 16, 17 and 18) entered with her as a leader in the Club House. However, no one had yet come to terms with Metraux - whose success earned them 30,000 euros against a total prize pool of 200,000 - which with three birdies (at 15, 16 and 17), joined the train of prime.
And in the play-off, she ticked all the boxes. And if Fanali signed the fifth second place of an Italian in the history of the Ladies Italian Open presented by the Piedmont Region, the 26th edition was truly blue in color.
With the amateurs protagonists and the big names who performed well. Virginia Elena Carta ranked 25th with 216 (70 70 76, par) after a last round with two faces (first nine holes in a big way, second nine with many errors).
The youngest on the field, the 16-year-old amateur Francesca Fiorellini, also performed well, 36 with 218 (72 69 77, +2) and with a guaranteed future. Brave performance by Erika De Martini, 52 / a with 221 (73 74 74, +5) despite a strong ankle problem, which preceded the amateurs Benedetta Moresco, 54 / a with 222 (72 77 73, +6), and Caterina Don (special tournament for her, Piedmontese), 61 / a with 225 (78 70 77, +9).
While they came out at the cut: Clara Manzalini, 67 / a with 150 (76 74, +6), Stefania Croce (78 77) and Martina Flori (80 75), with the latter two both 105 / and with 155 (+11 ).
