More and more local golf players in Alicante

Severiano Ballesteros, Sergio García Fernández, José María Olazábal or Jon Rahm, surely they are familiar to you because they are the names of some of the best professional golfers.

Golf in Alicante

This sport, which has traditionally been associated with users from the upper-middle class, has more and more fans in Spain.

The departures of local players (members and subscribers of the courses) have increased by 19.9% this 2022, according to data provided by the Association of Golf Courses of the Costa Blanca and the Valencian Community (ACGBCCV).

Although it is true that the majority of users who visit the golf courses in the province of Alicante are still foreigners and non-residents in our country, specifically 85% of them. The British (40%), the Nordics (28%) and the French (11%) continue to lead the ranking of tourists who spend the most time in the fields.

But why choose us? One of the main reasons is the climate we enjoy in the Mediterranean, since in the countries of our main visitors they do not enjoy so many hours of sunshine per year. On the other hand, the great hotel offer together with the gastronomy and leisure services offered by the province, make it the ideal tourist destination to practice this sport.

As far as the Valencian Community is concerned, there are 23 golf courses, 36 hotels and accommodation companies, several sponsors and collaborating companies, which are associated with the ACGBCCV. The city of Alicante and its surroundings have five golf courses: Alicante Golf, Bonalba, Plantío, Alenda and Font del Llop.

According to the latest study prepared by the Alicante Chamber of Commerce (2019), this activity generated benefits of almost 500 million euros for the province of Alicante, which also affect other sectors such as leisure, hotel and restaurant services, as well as in shops and car rental.

For this reason, the Tourist Board and the Association of Golf Courses of the Costa Blanca and the Valencian Community have launched a joint campaign to promote Alicante as a destination, aimed at publicizing the city's facilities among users of this sport.

"For this year 2022, each euro that a golf tourist spends is multiplied by fourteen in the destination economy and each job that is generated is multiplied by eight, so we are excited to continue betting on this product," said the deputy mayor of Alicante, Mari Carmen Sánchez in a statement.

As this newspaper explained in another article, it seems that the province's golf courses are recovering pre-pandemic figures this year in terms of user departures. "Global departures have increased by 57.2% compared to 2021, already bordering on the figures reached in 2019," recalls one of the main conclusions obtained from the ACGCBCV study.
