The Irish Amateur Golf Team won the European Team Championship 15 years ago. Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy were part of that team. Both have built great careers, especially McIlroy. Speaking to sportsjoe, Lowry revealed that he is still on good terms with McIlroy and that their wives are good friends.
"I got on tour but I was playing mainly in Europe and he was in America, so I wouldn't have seen him that much," he said. "But I think, over the last few years, we've grown closer than we ever have been. I live down here [in Florida] and live 10 minutes from him.
Our wives are very good friends and we have kids of a similar age. It's all worked out where we do hang out a bit and play practice rounds together."- Shane Lowry said.
Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy
Lowry is happy about the opportunity he had, which is to play against McIlroy.
Playing against McIlroy made him a better golfer. "I play quite a bit with at The Bear's Club, and I always say this - if you want to become a better golfer, you have to play with better players. And it has definitely helped me, over the years, playing golf with him, because if you go to The Bear's Club with him on a Tuesday afternoon and if you don't shoot 8-under, you're losing the money!" They are still good friends and you can feel the respect between these two great players.
"Definitely over the last four to five years, we've grown closer than we have ever been. And it's great for me to have one of the best players in the world, and certainly one of the greatest over the last 10 years, as one of my good friends and someone I can talk to."
