Blue hopes towards the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome. From 13 to 15 January next in Abu Dhabi, Guido Migliozzi will also be in the continental Europe team led by Francesco Molinari, who will challenge - in the Hero Cup - that of Great Britain & Ireland led by Tommy Fleetwood.
The English Luke Donald, who will lead the Old Continent to Rome next year at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, has announced 18 players who will take part in the Hero Cup in agreement with Chicco Molinari and Fleetwood.
A mix of experience and youth, for a Ryder format event that will provide indications towards the super match between the Europe team and the USA team in Rome. And in the United Arab Emirates there will also be Migliozzi who, with Francesco Molinari, is among the leading Azzurri who aspire to win a place for the next Ryder Cup.
Hero Cup, statements
As for continental Europe in the Hero Cup, Belgium will be represented by Thomas Detry and Thomas Pieters. While Denmark by Rasmus Hojgaard, Poland by Adrian Meronk, Sweden by Alex Noren, Austria by Sepp Straka, France by Victor Perez and Italy by Molinari and Migliozzi.
The Great Britain & Ireland team will be able to count on the Scots Ewen Ferguson and Robert MacIntyre, on the Irish Shane Lowry and Seamus Power, on the English Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Callum Shinkwin, Jordan Smith and Matt Wallace.
To complete the teams there will be two other players (one per team) still to be called up. "The continental European team is full of players with a lot of enthusiasm and who have all the attributes to excel in a match play event", declared Francesco Molinari.
The Hero World Challenge is a golf tournament organized by Tiger Woods and taking place every December. A small number of professional golfers selected from among the highest ranked (18 in 2016) participate in this tournament.
Proceeds from this tournament go to the Tiger Woods Foundation. Initially, only sixteen players participated in the tournament: the defending champion, the eleven best players in the world ranking, and four sponsors chosen by the Tiger Woods Foundation.
In 2008, the number of participants rose to eighteen. It now includes the most recent winners of the four grand slam tournaments, the Masters, the American Open (US Open), the British Open (The Open) and the PGA Championship (US PGA).
It also includes the eleven best players in the world, the defending champion, and two players selected by the foundation. The money won by participants is not included in the world rankings of professional golf, but the tournament is recognized as an unofficial profit-making event by the PGA Tour. Since 2009, the tournament has awarded points counting towards the world ranking.
