The bosses of planetary golf will meet urgently

The most influential people in world golf have planned to meet in Florida next week on the sidelines of The Match to discuss how they will organize to resist the emergence of the LIV Golf Invitational Series. According to information published in The Telegraph, the leaders of the main circuits and Major tournaments will be at the Pelican Golf Club to decide how to fight against the exodus of players on the LIV Golf, the dissident circuit financed by the PIF (the Fund of Public Investment of Saudi Arabia) and led by Greg Norman.

Liv, situation

DP World Tour's Keith Pelley (pictured right) and PGA Tour boss Jay Monahan (pictured left) will be in attendance, along with USGA's Mike Whan, R&A's Martin Slumbers and Seth Waugh for the PGA of America.

What about Fred Ridley, president of Augusta National? To date, it is not known if he has planned to participate. But as a member of the Pelican Golf Club and a central figure at the start of 2023, it would be surprising if he stayed away from these discussions after urging players not to join the LIV in the run-up to the Masters of last April.

Needless to say, the face of professional golf has changed significantly since the inaugural London LIV Golf in June as Norman is due to announce in the coming days what the 2023 Rebel League schedule will look like. It should revolve around 14 tournaments with 60 players for 48 places.

But the fight now extends to the courses. On Monday, the Mayakoba Championship tournament site, which has been on the PGA Tour calendar since 2007, announced that it will now receive a LIV event. El Camaleon, in Mexico, a layout signed by Greg Norman “himself”, has thus been selected for the inaugural tournament in January 2023.

In Europe, it is the course of Valderrama which is in the line of sight of the Saudis. This mythical route of the 1997 Ryder Cup and the Volvo Masters of Andalusia in the 90s/2000s will therefore disappear from the calendar of DP World Tour players.
