Henrik Stenson, it will not be a lonely return

From 19 to 22 January, Yas Links Abu Dhabi will host the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the first official tournament of 2023 (considering the previous week's Hero Cup a special event, as it is a team competition). It is yesterday's news that Henrik Stenson, the man who was Captain of the Ryfder Cup for three months, will be part of the field.

The Swede has not played on the DP World Tour since he announced his signing with LIV Golf in July last year. This distance is certainly understandable.

Henrik Stenson, schedule

Stenson joined the Saudi League despite having signed a pledge to the contrary, when he accepted the appointment as Captain of Team Europe, as he himself has admitted, and it has drawn heavy criticism from colleagues and fans.

Now, however, pending the well-known appeal pending in the Court, the Swedish champion has asked the Tour to be "treated fairly", which I have no doubts about. Moreover, Stenson's return will not be a solitary one. Scrolling through the tournament entry list, we discover that several LIV players will take part in it: Lee Westwood, Patrick Reed, Bernd Wiesberger, Ian James Poulter, to name a few.

But there is another name that stands out among those of the participants. In category 5 of the list (Legends Category) we find Luke Donald, Captain in charge of Team Europe. Henrik Stenson (Gothenburg, Sweden, April 5, 1976) is a Swedish golfer who has excelled at a professional level.

He has achieved eleven victories on the European Tour and five on the PGA Tour, highlighting the 2007 WGC Match Play, the 2009 Players Championship, the 2013 Tour Championship, the 2013 and 2014 Dubai World Championship, and the 2016 British Open.

He won the playoffs on the 2013 Pga Tour, and the Road to Dubai on the 2013 European Tour. As for major tournaments, Stenson was the winner at the 2016 British Open, second in 2013 and third in 2008 and 2010, third in the 2013 and 2014 PGA Championship and fourth in 2008, fourth at the 2014 US Open and ninth in 2009.

He also played three editions of the Ryder Cup with the European team, scoring six points in 11 games. The Swede has spent nine weeks in third place on the world golfers list, 29 weeks in the top five, 126 in the top 10 and 248 in the top 20.
