Varner is two strokes ahead of James Piot (-6.66), with a group tied for third at -4 consisting of Australia's Cameron Smith, Chile's Mito Pereira, Kevin Na and Andy Ogletree. Varner opened his round with a bogey on the par-three 4th hole, but returned to par to eagle the par-four 9th hole.
His second eagle came on the par-five 13th and was followed by two birdies, those who joined two other birdies in the other two par fives. Varner, 32, is looking for his first victory on the LIV circuit. The American leads with two shots ahead of James Piot, who signed seven birdies and a bogey.
Four strokes behind the leader is that quartet of players, including a surprising Ogletree who signed five birdies and a bogey in his debut in the tournament. There are several players in a large seventh place, with 69 shots and five behind the leader.
Among them are Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed. It is behind them, with -2, when another large group emerges with Bryson DeChambeau and the three Spaniards, who share fifteenth place. Sergio García signed his 70th after an irregular round with five birdies and three bogeys.
For his part, Eugenio López-Chacarra signed the same result, in his case after an eagle (par four on the 9th hole), three birdies, a bogey and a double-bogey (par three on the 17th). With -2 is also David Puig, who signed an eagle (par five of 13), three birdies and three bogeys.
