With the end of the British Open, the season of 'majors' has ended on an outstanding note for Jon Rahm. The first of the four Grand Slam golf tournaments, the Augusta Masters, he scored it precisely after a final heads-up with Brooks Koepka.
Perhaps the most beautiful big to win is the British Open, but there is no doubt that the green jacket triggers the status of any player. At the PGA Championship, in Oak Hill, the performance of the world number 3 was not the same and this pushed him to fiftieth place.
At the US Open, in Los Angeles CC, Jon improved his performance and was tenth, but without reaching the level shown weeks ago.
Jon Rahm, results
At the end of his participation in Royal Liverpool, where he was second and from least to most in the tournament, 'Rahmbo' pointed out that the victory in Augusta took its toll on him.
"My bad play in the last month or so is more related to exhaustion than anything else," he said. The Biscayan had four wins at that point in the season and, as he explained, "winning also takes away a lot, it creates stress." Even more so, the Masters.
The 'León de Barrika' had been the center of attention since the start of the season. In addition to his four victories, he also fought for Farmers and Phoenix Open wins. Many rounds under pressure to win and just the day after donning the green jacket, Rahm left for RBC Heritage.
Shortly after he went to defend the Mexico Open. As he indicated, the 'Lion of Barrika', the three weeks off before going to the British were "incredible". "I had never recovered after Augusta and I felt it a bit physically.
Last week is when I started to feel as good as the Masters," he explained. And with 'Rahmbo' at his best again and after a second place in the British, comes the final push for the Spanish golfer with seven very demanding tournaments: FedEx St.
Jude (August 10-13); BMW Championship (August 17-20); Tour Championship (24-27 August); BMW PGA Championship (September 14-17), Ryder Cup (September 29 - October 1); Spanish Open (October 12-15) and finally DPWT Championship (November 16-19).
