Lexi Thompson, 28, has received an unrestricted exception from a sponsor to play in the Shriners Children's Open and will thus become the seventh woman to play in a PGA Tour tournament. The American golfer has won a total of 11 championships on the women's circuit since entering the LPGA Tour in 2012 and she was part of this year's Solheim Cup team that she ended up losing to the European team.

“I am hopeful that my ability to play with the men next week at the Shriners Children’s Open sends a great message to young girls that you can pursue your dream no matter how difficult it is,” said the American athlete.
Lexi Thompson will be playing on Thursday, October 12 in the American city of Las Vegas and she will be part of the 132 golfers who will compete for the title. “I am grateful to Shriners Children’s for this opportunity,” she concluded.
Thompson is used to breaking the mold. In 2007, she became the youngest player to qualify, at just 12 years old, for the U.S. Championship. Women's Open. Additionally, she holds the record for being the youngest tournament winner when at 16 she won the LPGA Classic.
She will be the seventh woman to play in a PGA Tour tournament. “We are thrilled to welcome Lexi to the 2023 tournament,” added Patrick Lindsey, executive director of the Shriners Children’s Open. Babe Didrikson Zaharias was a pioneer and opened, in 1935, a path that a few female golfers have followed since then.
Lexi Thompson will be the first woman to play in a PGA Tour tournament since Brittany Lincicome did so in 2018. The American enters a select group that also includes Michelle Wie West, Suzy Whaley, Annika Sorenstam and Shirley Spork.
The Ladies European Tour (LET) is the professional circuit for female golfers (proettes) created in 1979, based in England. Most of the golfers who participate are European but it is possible to see golfers of non-European nationality, the largest contingent of which is Australian.
It is the equivalent of the LPGA for the European continent. Its mission is to organize and set up the various tournaments of the year, these can be organized outside Europe and/or be registered with another circuit (such as the Evian Masters which is also registered on the LPGA Tour).
