Released on parole, two-time Major winner Angel Cabrera was released from prison on August 4 after spending 30 months behind bars. Through a friend, the Argentine player suggested that he would like to return to the professional circuit, and in particular to the Champions Tour.

“Many say that prison is bad, but that’s not true, for me it was good. » During his 2nd trial in November 2022, Angel Cabrera made amends at the bar and pleaded guilty to the 2nd charge of domestic violence to which he was subject.

The winner of the 2007 US Open and 2009 Masters (photo) spent a total of more than two and a half years in prison. He was convicted twice for threats, harassment and violence against two of his ex-girlfriends. He pleaded guilty the second time.

Today, the former champion says he has changed. Through his coach and longtime friend, Charlie Epps, he made known his desire to return to the professional circuit. At 54, Cabrera can claim to play on the Champions Tour with his two Grand Slam titles.

“He wants to play. He learned his lesson. He wants to get his life back. He is in a good state of mind today, after what he went through,” Charlie Epps told Golfweek. “He wants to play golf again on a professional circuit,” concluded the friend of the Argentine golfer.

Who hasn't played a tournament in the United States since September 2020. It was on the Champions Tour during the Pure Insurance Open. But the official response from the PGA Tour, which manages the senior circuit, is not very encouraging for him.

“We know he was paroled, but at this point he hasn’t gotten his membership card back. We will study all the information at our disposal to decide whether the situation merits development. » According to Charlie Epps and other sources close to the player, Angel Cabrera has lost weight and is playing very good golf at his course in Cordoba, Argentina.

But he is therefore still suspended by the PGA Tour until further notice. And he has not yet obtained a visa to be able to travel to American soil, even though he requested one…
