The 2023 season of LIV Golf has drawn to a close with Talor Gooch securing victory in the individual rankings and Captain DeChambeau's Team Crushers GC claiming victory in the team competition.

One of the major changes brought in by LIV from the previous season was the introduction of a transfer window for players to switch teams at the end of each season, using a mechanism similar to that employed by NBA and NFL.

Liv Golf, market

On Wednesday, LIV Golf officially announced the opening of the transfer market for teams. However, let us first assess the final individual rankings, which are grouped into three distinct categories.

1. Lock Zone

The top 24 players are automatically extended an invitation to participate in the 2024 season, along with an offer of a one-year extension to their current contracts with their respective teams.

In the event of rejection of this offer, the player becomes a free agent.

2. Open Zone

Players who have ranked between 25th and 44th place in the individual rankings are guaranteed a spot in the 2024 season but have no certainty about their contracts.

Thus, they are free agents by definition, and teams can initiate negotiations to extend existing contracts or offer new ones.

LIV Golf's approach towards the transfer market and the ability for players to move to different teams at the end of each season ensures an element of excitement and unpredictability which is bound to keep the fans engaged and the competition fierce.

Of course, these negotiations can also be directed towards players who fall into the Lock Zone but who have declined their team's offer.

Moving onto the Drop Zone, this is undoubtedly a position no player wants to find themselves in.

The bottom four teams have lost their playing privileges for next season, and the only way to regain entry is through the LIV Golf Promotions event, which essentially concludes the Saudi League season.

Taking place from 8th to 10th December at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club, this 72-hole tournament promises to award the top three finishers with invitations for the 2024 season.

Meanwhile, the fourth spot has already been awarded to Andy Ogletree, who won the International Series rankings for 2023, a collection of Asian Tour tournaments generously sponsored by LIV Golf.

The four players selected will complete the teams for the upcoming season, with an additional window for 2024 mid-season transfers in place.
