Golf, hole in one

The rules of golf constitute a set of standard provisions and protocols that govern the game of this sporting discipline. They are formulated and governed by the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, the highest regulatory body for golf internationally, with the exception of the United States and Mexico, whose rights are entrusted to the United States Golf Association.

Overseen by an expert panel made up of members of the R&A and USGA, these rules are reviewed every four years. The latest revision came into force on 1 January 2016. Generally made changes to the rules of golf fall into two main categories: those which aim to improve understanding and those aimed at ensuring fairness, including through the reduction of penalties in some cases.

The rules reference book, titled “Rules of Golf,” is published periodically and also includes rules governing amateur status. In Italy, the responsibility for enforcing the rules issued by the R&A lies with Federgolf, which monitors compliance with these provisions by clubs, associations and their members.

It also manages sports justice arising and protects the interests of athletes abroad. The rules of golf are relatively complex when compared to other sports, since this game takes place outdoors, in close contact with nature and animals.

Respecting the rules is a fundamental pillar of golf, an activity that is based on the free conscience and self-discipline of players. This is why it often happens that the results of the match are distorted, sometimes consciously, but often out of carelessness or unawareness, caused by the failure of many players to comply with the rules.

Additionally, golf has a code of behavior, known as etiquette, that requires respect for the course and other players. The label represents an essential element of this sport.
