The rules governing the game of golf are universal standards that protect the integrity of this age-old sport.

The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, the highest governing body of world golf, in collaboration with the United States Golf Association, is responsible for drafting and managing these rules, to ensure an always top playing experience.

The R&A and the USGA have a commission of experts who, every four years, supervise and improve the rules. The latest revision, effective January 1, 2016, introduced changes to improve understanding and balance penalties.

The rule book, called the "Rules of Golf", is constantly updated and also regulates amateur status. In Italy, Federgolf is the competent body to supervise competitions and enforce the rules issued by the R&A, ensuring sporting justice and protecting the interests of members at both a national and international level.

The rules of golf appear to be rather intricate compared to other sports, since this discipline is practiced outdoors, in close contact with nature and animals. Respect for the rules constitutes a fundamental element for the practice of this sport, which often, based on the self-control and loyal conscience of the players, is distorted in its results.

This happens consciously or unconsciously, due to the failure of many athletes to comply with the rules of the game. In addition to the rules, golf includes a code of behavior, called "etiquette", which involves playing the game with due respect for the golf course and other players.

Etiquette represents an essential component of this discipline.
