Between 2004 and 2014, the city's metropolitan area was ranked as the fastest growing area of inhabitants, with 88 000 new residents. Charlotte is also the second city in the USA by number of banks[1] and the twentieth by size.

The city is located in the south-central part of the Piedmont region, near the border with South Carolina. Founded in 1762. The city's economy is based on financial activities, which matured between the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century, and commercial ones, although there is no shortage of important industrial groups, such as the Nucor Corporation, a steel group which moved its headquarters there in 1991, after having had an office there since 1966.

The main office and headquarters of the Adventist Christian Church is located in Charlotte. According to 2006 estimates, the city, considering the entire metropolitan area, has around one and a half million inhabitants.
