Thirty-three years after the last time (Phil Mickelson in 1991), an amateur returns to win a PGA Tour tournament. In La Quinta, California, the American Nick Dunlap with a total of 259 (64 65 60 70, -29 ) strokes (new competition record) won 'The American Express' by outsprinting the South African Christiaan Bezuidenhout, 2nd with 260 (-28) ahead of two big Americans, Xander Schauffele and Justin Thomas, 3rd with 261 (-27) alongside Kevin Yu.

"It took me a long time to putt that last putt, it's true. But I wanted to enjoy the moment, because in sport as in life nothing is taken for granted. I might never have this chance again, so I wanted to make the most of that moment", the first statements of the 20-year-old American.

A budding talent, last summer he emulated Tiger Woods by becoming the second player to win both the U.S. Junior that the U.S. Amateur. Another record for Dunlap, the youngest amateur since 1931 (Charles Kocsis at the Michigan Open) to win on the PGA Tour (founded in 1929).

Dunlap, who thanks to this exploit has won an exemption to play on the circuit until 2026, is now called upon to make a decision: turn professional or still remain an amateur? "I have no idea, I don't want to think about it right now", the American's response.

Whose statement at The American Express, given his status as an amateur golfer, did not allow him to collect a single dollar. And to think that second place earned Bezuidenhout 1,512,000.
