Naomi Osaka talks about her darkest moment

Former world number one Naomi Osaka has now been out of action for almost a year, since August 20, 2022 where she was defeated in the first round of the US Open.

Many things have changed since that period, Naomi overcame her mental problems and then finally just under a month ago, on 11 July 2023, she became the mother of a beautiful little girl, named Shai. As mentioned during her career, however, the Japanese woman had to deal with depression, often having a conflicting relationship with the media, the spotlight, attention, etc.

In 2021, the four-time Slam champion decides not to take part in the Roland Garros press conference. She decides to face a fine of 15,000 dollars by deciding not to appear in front of the microphones. After retiring for months due to pregnancy, Osaka said she wanted to return to the court in January 2024.

Naomi spoke to the microphones of the Mountaintop Conversations podcast, returning to the problems faced in the past: "The more I felt that I was becoming known, the more I understood that I was closing myself off and that my character was changing, and I didn't like this at all.

At that moment I thought: I have to take a break, but I can't take it because then I'll get a fine. But then I thought that I would rather have the fine than face all this with my energy. I didn't know what mental health was.

When you grow up nobody talks about it and I honestly think the first time I heard about mental health was when I withdrew from Roland Garros. It's not that I had a dark childhood or anything like that, it's just that everything in my life was so focused on tennis."
