Three golden health rules for working from home

Legends like John Lennon and Winston Churchill was known for their propensity to work in their pajamas in bed. But research indicates that to work with your laptop on your couch or in your bed, is anything but ideal when it comes to your health.

In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, a lot of workers have started working from home. Many people do not have the necessary desk or a separate study to use as a home office. Suddenly the kitchen table or iron board had to double as a desk.

The three golden rules when working from home

Even though you can make the situation work, there are three golden rules you have to follow to ensure good health when working from home:

  • Get a proper chair.
  • Don’t eat at your desk.
  • Don’t take your mobile phone to the bathroom.
If you can setup your work space ergonomically, you will avoid unnecessary pressure on your muscles, as well as lower backache and tendonitis.

Your muscles won’t get as tired and your productivity will be increased. But the easiest and most efficient way to aid here, is a proper office chair. Ensure you have enough fresh air and natural light in your office space.

Remember regular breaks and physical movement will aid in both your physical and mental health. Stay hydrated by regularly drinking water. Go for a quick walk and stretch your limbs every now and then. Don’t sit for hours at a time – something that can easily happen if you have endless Zoom-meetings scheduled.

Whether you are sick or healthy, it is always important to maintain good hygiene. Keep your work place clean, including your monitor, keyboard, mouse, chair and stationary. You can clean it with regular cleaning products, but remember to unplug any electronics first.

Regularly wash your hands to prevent germs from spreading. Recent surveys have shown that most workers would prefer to work from home (at least some of the time) even after the pandemic. A safe and hygienic work space at home is crucial to optimize the benefits of working from home.

It will limit the risk of injury as well as getting sick. If nothing else, the three golden health rules for working from home, will keep you safe, happy and productive.
