Former world No. 5 Jo-Wifried Tsonga, 2017 Nitto ATP Finals runner-up David Goffin, France's Ugo Humbert and Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili have all been confirmed for Metz. Tsonga, 36, is set to make his ninth main draw appearance in Metz.
Tsonga has had success in Metz throughout his career, having won the tournament in 2015 and 2019. Goffin, ranked at No. 19 in the world, is set for a fifth Metz appearance. In 2014, Goffin won it all in Metz in his debut appearance at the tournament.
Humbert, 23, is set to make his third Metz appearance. Humbert made the Metz round-of-16 in 2018, while he exited the tournament in the first round in 2019. Meanwhile, Basilashvili is expected to make his fifth Metz appearance this year.
Basilashvili's best result in Metz came in 2017, when he made the semifinal before losing to Benoit Paire.
Tsonga refusing to quit
“I think the goal for the moment is to prove to myself that I’m able to still play a good level of tennis,” Tsonga told the ATP website in June.
Tsonga has only one victory in 2021. That victory came in Marseille, where he beat Feliciano Lopez in the first round. "This is probably one of the best victories of my career, because it was tough for me to play tennis.
I had so much pain for so many months,” Tsonga said after beating Lopez. “Today, I won one match. That was one of my goals for these few weeks… I’m happy like a kid." Tsonga has had a couple of tough years dealing with injuries.
"What I’ve been through the past couple of months was really challenging and when you play tennis, it’s because you like tennis,” Tsonga noted. “For me, it’s already a big challenge to be able to play good matches and to be able to still compete with the new generation."
