John McEnroe slaims ATP: Having any tournaments in Laver Cup week is mistake

Former seven-time Grand Slam champion John McEnroe has urged the ATP to do a better job of promoting the Laver Cup as he believes there should be no ATP events in the Laver Cup week. The Laver Cup held its fourth edition over this past weekend in Boston.

Simultaneously, ATP 250 events in Metz and Nur-Sultan took place. Some of the best players in the world participated at the Laver Cup as the event featured six top-10 players. "This is my personal opinion, but I don’t think there should be any tournaments going on if they want to try to get to the level of a Ryder Cup, say,” McEnroe said following the event.

“It’s got to stand on its own. It’s not going to be like, ‘Well, other players need to be able to play and … get their points in Kazakhstan or wherever they are right now. “I just don’t agree with that.

I think it’s a mistake by the ATP. Yet it’s difficult to sort of get, sort of, the respect that I think this deserves. It tears me up”.

McEnroe failed to captain Team World to a win

McEnroe once again failed to lead Team World to a win over Team Europe and this time it ended in a disaster.

Team Europe destroyed Team World by a 14-1 score and now own a perfect 4-0 record at the event. McEnroe has vowed to come back next year and lead Team World to their first win. “I feel like it will be like, “No one wins the Laver Cup, beats us, John McEnroe, five times in a row’,” said McEnroe.

“We battled our best. These guys are a great team, no question, incredible team. They had good team spirit. We did as well. “Obviously if you get a couple different results, [we] could have put more pressure on them, but we just came up short in I think [five] tie-breaks. You win half those, totally different story”.
