Daniil Medvedev claimed the title in Shanghai 2019, beating Alexander Zverev 6-4, 6-1 in an hour and 13 minutes. Medvedev joined Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic on four ATP titles that season, dominating his sixth straight final and securing the 29th victory from 32 matches after Wimbledon!
With those points, the Russian moved in front of Roger Federer on the ATP Race and extended the streak of the world's best player at that moment. It was Daniil's third consecutive Masters 1000 final and the second title from as many events, conquering Cincinnati in August and shifting that form to China.
Thus, Medvedev became the fourth player with the Cincinnati-Shanghai combo in the same season after Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. Zverev defeated Medvedev in the previous four encounters but stood no chance in this one, hitting two double faults at 30-30 in the tenth game of the first set and fading from the court after that.
Daniil Medvedev claimed the second consecutive Masters 1000 title in Shanghai 2019.
The German finished the encounter with 14 winners and 20 unforced errors, while Daniil stood on 19 winners and 14 mistakes. The Russian delivered better numbers in the shortest rallies and most extended ones to seal the deal in straight sets and celebrate the seventh title in a career.
Daniil made the best possible start, taking 13 of the first 16 points and moving in front with a break at 15 in game two. Alexander found his shots in the upcoming games and broke back on the fifth break chance at 1-3 when Medvedev sprayed a forehand error, remaining in touch until game ten when he served for staying in the set.
The German hit a smash winner for a 30-30 before those two double faults ruined his chances for a better result, handing the set to Daniil, who gained a massive boost ahead of set number two. The Russian repelled a break point in the first game and moved 2-0 in front when Alexander landed a forehand wide a few minutes later.
Losing ground completely, Zverev suffered another break in game four after Daniil's volley winner. Medvedev sealed the deal with an ace in game seven for the second consecutive Masters 1000 crown and extension of his incredible streak in the last three months.
