Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios says nowadays he just goes out on the court and has fun. Kyrgios found himself in a dark spot a few years ago and he didn't play much tennis in 2020 and 2021. Kyrgios is now in a much better space and he has had a positive start to the 2022 season.
Kyrgios enjoyed a memorable Australian Open as he lifted his maiden Grand Slam title alongside his close friend Thanasi Kokkinakis. On Saturday, wildcard Kyrgios destroyed Federico Delbonis 6-2 6-2 to progress into the Indian Wells third round.
"I'm Nick Kyrgios and I just go out there and have fun. If I win, I win, and if I lose, I lose and life's good," Kyrgios said.
Kyrgios feels great
After beating Sebastian Baez in the Indian Wells first round, Kyrgios opened on his well-being.
“I’m just comfortable in my own skin,” Kyrgios said after beating Baez. “Mentally I feel the best I’ve probably ever felt, to be honest”. Kyrgios is playing injury-free and it's showing on the court.
"Physically I do not feel hindered anymore [with] my movement,” Kyrgios noted. “Tonight, I was running for drop shots, [moving] side to side, I could slide again with no pain, on my serve I can land with no pain.
I was able to play before [with the injury] but there was something in my mind that I was feeling. It was definitely weighing my game down. “Physically I feel good, I haven’t felt my left knee feel that good in a while." Kyrgios, 26, is making his fifth appearance in Indian Wells.
Kyrgios will have a tough task in the third round as he plays next Casper Ruud. Kyrgios has had some big wins in Indian Wells as in 2017 he stunned world No. 2 Novak Djokovic at the tournament. It remains to be seen how far can 2017 Indian Wells quarterfinalist Kyrgios go at the tournament this year.
