American tennis star John Isner made tennis history on Saturday in Miami as he became just the second man to complete the Double Sunshine with different partners. In the Miami Masters doubles final, Isner and Hubert Hurkacz defeated Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski 7-6 (5) 6-4.
Isner also captured the Indian Wells Masters doubles title but with Jack Sock. Isner became only the second player to win the Sunshine Double with different partners as Jakob Hlasek achieved the feat in 1989. "It certainly feels good, but I partnered up well," Isner admitted after the final, per the ATP Tour website "You guys saw that last game, it was 40/30 them, I didn't hit a single ball and we won that match.
"It's a pleasure playing with Hubi. He does so many things so well."
Hurkacz enjoyed playing with Isner
It was the third tournament that Isner and Hurkacz played together. Prior to Miami, Isner and Hurkacz were 0-2 as a pair.
In Miami, Isner and Hurkacz dropped just one set en route to winning the title. "I think John is the hottest dubs player on Tour right now," said Hurkacz. "I love Miami a lot. Was able to win singles last year and now winning with John doubles.
This place is very special for me." Koolhof and Skupski had a chance to start the match with an early break but they missed out on a break point chance in the second game. After saving a break point in the second game, Isner and Hurkacz earned their first break points in the ninth game but Koolhof and Skupski saved two break points to force a tie-break.
In the tie-break, Isner and Hurkacz were 5-4 down before winning the next three points to win the first set. The only break of the match came in the key moments as Isner and Hurkacz broke Koolhof and Skupski in the 10th game, when they were serving to stay in the final. It remains to be seen if Isner and Hurkacz will team up again in the rest of the year.
