Former world No. 1 Jim Courier certainly can spot a talent and he believes Carlos Alcaraz has what it takes to be a great player. Alcaraz is just 18 years old but is quickly establishing himself as one of the best players in the world.
In Indian Wells, Alcaraz reached his maiden Masters semifinal. Two weeks later, Alcaraz reached his maiden Masters final in Miami. “He makes a lot of adjustments, he has creativity. He has so many options that it's hard not to be excited about this player.
It's amazing to see him play the important points with so much confidence," Courier said on Tennis Channel, per We Love Tennis.
Alcaraz praised by his idol Rafael Nadal
Alcaraz grew up watching and idolizing Nadal.
In Indian Wells, Alcaraz fell just short of becoming the first player in 2022 to beat Nadal. Alcaraz competed extremely well against Nadal but the record 21-time Grand Slam champion escaped with a 6-4 4-6 6-3 win. After the match, Nadal praised Alcaraz and said the 18-year-old "has all the ingredients" neccessary to become a great player.
“I think he has all the shots,” said Nadal after extending his unbeaten record this year to 20-0. “He can play very aggressive. He can play defensive because he's super fast. He can defend amazing balls.
Of course, when he's playing aggressive, it is difficult to stop him because the quality of his ball is very high. “I think he has all the ingredients to become an amazing champion. I didn't come to the match more nervous because I was playing a youngster.
I treated it like I was playing against a top-eight player. In terms of level, that was my feeling”. The way Alcaraz is playing some think he could become a Grand Slam champion as a teenager.
