Swiss tennis star Stan Wawrinka has withdrawn from Geneva due to an injury, tournament director Thierry Grin announced. Wawrinka, a former world No. 3, was scheduled to make his sixth Geneva appearance this year. Wawrinka made his Geneva debut in 2015, when he reached the quarterfinal.
After reaching the quarterfinal in 2015, Wawrinka won back-to-back Geneva titles in 2016 and 2017. Wawrinka also reached the Geneva quarterfinal in 2018 and in 2019 made the quarterfinal. “It’s a disappointment because obviously we are in Switzerland," Grin told AFP, per Tennishead.
"He won the tournament twice, he was the ambassador of the tournament for the first three years after it returned to Geneva. Unfortunately he is injured. It happens”.
Wawrinka last played in Rome
Wawrinka has played three tournaments since returning from a 12-month absence.
After losing his openers in Marbella and Monte Carlo, Wawrinka clinched his first victory since returning in Rome. Wawrinka recovered from a set down in the Rome first round to beat Reilly Opelka, before beating Laslo Djere to set up a Novak Djokovic clash.
Wawrinka, who is still nowhere near his top form, stood no chance versus Djokovic as the Serb claimed a 6-2 6-2 win. “It is great to see Stan back and winning. He won two tough matches. You can see he is still not physically where he wants to be.
But nevertheless he is Stan Wawrinka and he can hurt you if you give him time,” Djokovic said after beating Wawrinka. “I managed to do well from the beginning. I really moved him around the court and held my serve comfortably except for that loss of my serve in the second set”.
Wawrinka will now take a week off and then play at the French Open. Wawrinka is a two-time French Open finalist but he won't be among French Open title contenders this year.
