Matteo Berrettini sounds off on Wimbledon situation: I got screwed

World No. 10 Matteo Berrettini voiced some frustration over the Wimbledon situation as he stated that he "got screwed." Berrettini, who reached his maiden Grand Slam final at Wimbledon last year, will experience a big ranking drop when the ATP rankings list gets updated after The Championships.

Wimbledon imposed players bans on Russian and Belarusian players and the ATP reacted by removing ranking points from this year's tournament. Berrettini, who has been a top-10 player for over the last two years, will exit the top-20 after Wimbledon.

"I got screwed," Berrettini said, per Yahoo News. "It's a tough situation, I have so many points to defend and now I can't defend them,"

"It will be totally different for players," Berrettini said.

"It's bad what happened for the Russians and Belarussians, but it's also not fair for the rest of the players." Meanwhile, Berrettini defeated fellow Italian Lorenzo Sonego 3-6 6-3 6-4 in the Stuttgart quarterfinal.

“It was a really tough match,” Berrettini said. “Lorenzo was playing really well. I wasn’t feeling that comfortable but it is normal. I haven’t played for three months and it isn’t easy to come back.

The crowd helped me and my team is always here. I am happy with the win”. Berrettini and Sonego met for the first time on the ATP Tour but they are no strangers to each other. In 2016 and 2019, Berrettini claimed victories over Sonego on the ATP Challenger Tour.

On Friday, they met for the first time on the main level. Berrettini and Sonego have known each other since they were kids and Berrettini says it is always a pleasure to play his fellow compatriot. “It is really nice, we are playing in the best tournaments in the world against each other,” Berrettini said.

“We started playing against each other aged 10, so it is really nice to see where we are. He is a really nice guy, we hit a lot together”.
