Daniil Medvedev to Tim Van Rijthoven: Must feel great to destroy world No. 2

Daniil Medvedev was in good spirits after losing the 's-Hertogenbosch final as he jokingly told Tim Van Rijthoven that it must have felt great for him to destroy the world No. 2 in an ATP final. On Sunday, Van Rijthoven absolutely impressed in his maiden ATP final as the Dutch wildcard ousted first-seeded Medvedev 6-4 6-1.

It was the first meeting between Medvedev and Van Rijthoven on the main level. Van Rijthoven is 25 and he arrived to 's-Hertogenbosch without an ATP win under his name. “Amazing week. [You] destroyed the No. 2 in the world in straight sets in the final, so I think it must be a good feeling!” Medvedev said to Van Rijthoven.

“An amazing match today. Keep it going. I remember you from juniors, you have the talent so now you need to make more matches like this and more tournaments like this! Congrats to you and your team”.

Van Rijthoven showed Medvedev respect

Medvedev recovered from an early first set but Van Rijthoven broke Medvedev again in the 10th game, when the Russian was serving to stay in the first set.

After winning the first set, Van Rijthoven started the second set with back-to-back breaks and a 5-0 lead. Medvedev saved a match point in the sixth game to cut the second set deficit to 1-5 but Van Rijthoven routinely served out for the match in the seventh game.

“I’d like to show huge respect to Daniil,” Van Rijthoven said to Medvedev. “You’re a great player, I’ve watched you on TV many times, and now to play you myself, that was already a dream.

Playing against you was amazing and it was an honour to share the court with you, and you are for sure going to win many more titles. I’ll see you hopefully in the future many more times on the court”.
