Defending champion Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev confirmed for Vienna

Defending Vienna champion Alexander Zverev has signed up to play the Austrian ATP 500 event this year, per Michal Samulski. The Vienna organizers are preparing another tournament edition with a star-studded player as Daniil Medvedev, Matteo Berrettini, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Dominic Thiem and Frances Tiafoe are also expected to play at the tournament.

Zverev, Berrettini, Tsitsipas and Tiafoe will all be making their third appearances in Vienna this year.

Of the four mentioned players above, only Zverev has been able to win it all in Vienna. Berrettini had a promising Vienna run in 2019, when he reached the semifinal before losing to Thiem. Tiafoe, 24, had a strong Vienna run last year as he made the final before losing to Zverev.

Meanwhile, world No. 1 Medvedev is set for his second Vienna appearance. In 2020, Medvedev suffered a quarterfinal defeta to Kevin Anderson in his Vienna debut.

Can Zverev repeat as the Vienna champion?

In the 2021 Vienna final, Zverev defeated Tiafoe 7-5 6-4.

“He didn’t let me play the way I wanted to play, tactically he was very good,” Zverev said after winning the title. “But I am happy with the win and I am happy with my fifth title of the year and I am happy with my first in Vienna, so it was a good day”.

On the other side, Tiafoe left Vienna satisfied even though he didn't win his first ATP 500 title. “I knew I was capable of a week like this,” Tiafoe said. “It is not easy to beat good player after good player.

These guys are so good. To have a week like this and know you can do it and not just beat one top player but three great guys is great”. The Vienna event takes place later this year as it is scheduled for October 24-30. It remains to be seen if Zverev can defend his Vienna title.
