Former American tennis player Leif Shiras thinks American tennis definitely has some very talented players as he is hoping to see Taylor Fritz and Amanda Anisimova make great runs at the US Open. Fritz, 24, enjoyed his best-ever Grand Slam run at this past Wimbledon.
For the first time in his career, Fritz reached a Grand Slam quarterfinal. Unfortunately for Fritz, his Wimbledon campaign came to an end following a tight five-set loss to Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinal. "I would like to see that Americans doing well and maybe winning a title.
It is time for one of our young American guys, maybe Taylor Fritz you know," Shiras said in a conversation with Kamau Murray, per Sportskeeda. "Now that he's gotten some Wimbledon glory, he can have a little bit US Open glory."
Shiras hoping Fritz, Anisimova make great US Open runs
Anisimova, 20, also enjoyed a storng Wimbledon run as she reached the quarterfinal before losing to Simona Halep. The US Open is the only Grand Slam where Anisimova has never reached the second week but Shiras feels this could be the year the 20-year-old American makes a strong run at Flushing Meadows.
"I also like Amanda Anisimova," Shiras said. "The way she's playing get her on a fast hardcourt with her talent, you know maybe it's her time. She's already been quarterfinals now Wimbledon at Roland Garros, can she you know maybe have a big breakthrough in New York, I'd like to see that."
Both Fritz and Anisimova have been enjoying good season and they will certainly be extremely motivated to do well in front of their home fans in New York. Fritz has been playing the tennis of his life this season so the fact that he has never reached the second week at the US Open shouldn't be concerning.
Anisimova has also been playing well this year and this could very easily be the year she makes her first great US Open run.
