2022 Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios said he decided to open up about some of his past struggles because he wanted to show others who might be going through similar problems that overcoming certain things is definitely possible.
As a kid, Kyrgios was overweight and that led to feeling insecure and low on confidence. Also earlier this year, Kyrgios opened about his battle with depression. Now, Kyrgios is feeling stronger than ever and he has been playing the tennis of his life this season.
After reaching the Wimbledon final, Kyrgios posted on Instagram a photo from his younger days, when he was overweight.
Kyrgios: I know how it feels to be going through certain things
"I feel like there are a lot of athletes and a lot of people in general now who are opening up about it, which is good, but honestly, when I was going through it all, I didn't really have that one person who was kind of talking me through those things, and it was just kind of snowballing out of control.
So I know how much it means when I see a kid low on confidence or he's embarrassed or insecure to go out there and play a sport because he might be overweight or anything like that. I know what that feels like, so I feel like I can help a lot of people, but it's gotta start with that person.
They have to want to be better," said Kyrgios during his post-match press conference in the Citi Open," Kyrgios explained, per Sportskeeda. Kyrgios is having a great season and being happy off the court seems to be the main reason behind his success in 2022.
Throughout the entire season, Kyrgios has been accompanied at tournaments by his girlfriend Costeen Hatzi. Kyrgios enjoys being on the Tour with his girlfriend and that seems to be working extremely well for him.
