Medvedev will be hoping to bounce back in Nur-Sultan
Medvedev, who is still the top-ranked player in the world, has failed to defend his US Open title.
On Sunday, Medvedev exited the US Open after Nick Kyrgios handed him a 7-6 (11) 3-6 6-3 6-2 loss. After the match, Medvedev admitted that it felt like he was playing a Big Three group member. "It was a high-level match," Medvedev said.
"(Kyrgios) played (like) Novak, Rafa. They all play amazing. Nick today played kind of their level, in my opinion. He has a little bit different game because he's not like a grinder in a way. At the same time he can rally. He's tough to play.
He has an amazing serve. But from baseline it's not like when the point starts, you know that you have the advantage. He plays good. He has every shot." Since Medvedev is set to lose a notable number of points, he will lose the top ranking on Monday.
Alcaraz, Rafael Nadal and Casper Ruud all have a chance to overtake Medvedev at the top spot in a few days. It remains to be seen how will bounce back following his US Open disappointment.
