Gael Monfils has confirmed that his recovery is going well but noted that he may take additional time before returning to the court due to pregnancy of his wife Elina Svitolina. In May, Monfils announced he and Svitolina were expecting their first child.
Svitolina, a fellow tennis pro, is due to give birth in October. After being out for three months due to a heel injury, Monfils returned to action at the Montreal Masters, where he sustained a foot injury. Because of the injury, Monfils has been out for the past month and a half.
However, Monfils has found a silver lining in his latest injury as it has given him a chance to spend time with his pregnant wife.
Monfils gives an update to his fans
"Hi friends, I wanted to give you some news because I haven't been very talkative lately.
Following my injury contracted in Montreal, upon my return to Europe I began my rehabilitation in Monaco and now at the Clinique de la Tour in Geneva. I am extremely well taken care of and I am very happy with the progress made every day.
I consider myself lucky in my misfortune because I can spend precious moments with my wife and accompany her in the last weeks of her pregnancy. You will understand that I should adapt my recovery date due to this happy event to come, but I will be sure to give you more details soon," Monfils wrote on Twitter.
Monfils made a positive start to the season, but then started dealing with injuries.
Vous comprendrez que je devrais adapter ma date de reprise en raison de cet heureux événement à venir mais je ne manquerai pas de vous donner plus de détails prochainement 🙏🏾 — Gael Monfils (@Gael_Monfils) September 29, 2022
In January, Monfils won Adelaide and reached the Australian Open quarterfinal. Since January, Monfils has appeared in a total of five tournaments. Monfils hasn't played much in recent months, but at least he has a chance to spend more time with his wife and focus on the upcoming parenthood.
