Daniil Medvedev not firing coach Gilles Cervara: I'm the one that needs to do better

Daniil Medvedev says he will continue working with coach Gilles Cervara as he admits he has no one to blame but himself for some of his results in 2022. Medvedev, 26, has been working with Cervara full-time since the summer of 2017.

This year, Medvedev captured two titles - Vienna and Los Cabos - and finished the year ranked at No 7 in the world. For Medvedev, the expectations are far more than winning an ATP 250 and ATP 500 tournament. At the start of the year in the Australian Open final, Medvedev had a two-set lead and three consecutive break points in the third set before blowing it all and losing the final in five sets to Rafael Nadal.

Medvedev also didn't enjoy a strong end to the season, having gone 0-3 at the ATP Finals. In two of his three defeats in Turin, Medvedev had a chance to serve out for the match but he still lost on both occasions.

Medvedev: I want to continue with Cervara as my coach

“It remains obvious from my side that we have to continue.

The season was just ‘not so good’, it was not rotten. I feel that that together I can still improve as a player and he as a coach. In Turin, I served twice for the match and I lost three times in the group stage 7-6 in the third.

But it’s still three high-level matches. It’s not up to Gilles, but to me to do better. We’re working well, it will pay off," Medvedev told Tennis Majors. Medvedev and Cervara renew their partnership at the end of each season.

When it comes to Cervara, he suggests he would understand if Medvedev came to him and said he wanted a change of scenery. “Every year after the US Open, I ask him if he wants to continue. I never think it’s obvious.

Sometimes you can feel the need or the desire to change to have another experience even when it works. I could understand it coming from Daniil because I myself can have this tendency, this freedom and this desire for challenge," Cervara said.
